EXPERIENCED PROSECUTOR NEEDED TO SERVE AS A RESIDENT LEGAL
ADVISOR IN CHIISINAU, MOLDOVA
The Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT), a unit
within the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice, seeks an experienced Assistant United
States Attorney or Department of Justice Trial Attorney to fill the position of Resident Legal
Advisor (RLA) for Moldova. The RLA will be stationed in Chisinau, Moldova beginning in
June 2006. This assignment is for a term of one year with the possibility of a continuation,
contingent upon available funding. (This is a reimbursable detail.)
The RLA represents the US Department of Justice and OPDAT while implementing a justice
sector assistance program. During his or her tenure, the RLA will provide assistance on criminal
justice projects related to combating trafficking in persons and public corruption, including: (1)
monitoring the investigation and prosecution of trafficking in persons cases, (2) conducting
assistance programs designed to improve the skills of Moldovan law enforcement in the
investigation and prosecution of complex cases, (3) advising government officials on the
implementation of the criminal procedure code and (4) working with government officials to
improve the anti-corruption strategy. The RLA will work closely with senior local law
enforcement and government officials, including prosecutors, judges and legislators, and may be
called upon to provide advice on a range of issues relating to the administration of justice and
rule of law programs.
Applicants must have excellent interpersonal and management skills, be mature and self-
sufficient, communicate effectively orally and in writing, and possess extensive prosecutorial
experience in a variety of substantive criminal areas. Applicants should also be able to work
with diverse types of individuals and groups and achieve consensus on difficult and
multidimensional issues. In addition, international experience, particularly in working with
foreign law enforcement and justice systems, is an important asset. Experience in working with
the legal systems of former Soviet states, and Russian or Romanian language skills are helpful
but not required.
