The FBI's Missing Nazi Files

>>> Like many federal agencies, the FBI has a section of its Website containing documents frequently requested under the Freedom of Information Act. But some of those files have disappeared. At one point, you could download declassified documents on Adolph Hitler, Klaus Barbie, and members of the Basque government who reported on political conditions in South America during and after WWII. Those files are now gone.

It seems likely that this disappearance has to do with the fact that the FBI has recently turned over all its files relating to Nazi war crimes to the National Archives, which will review them for possible release. [Read more.] But as pointed out, some of these files have already been released. Since we find it hard to imagine how national security could be jeopardized by WWII-era information about Hitler and the Nazis, we're reposting the files the FBI withdrew from public circulation. (The descriptions of the material used below are were from the FBI's site.)

KLAUS BARBIE

76 pages

The FBI records regarding Klaus Barbie indicate that in 1983 he was expelled from Bolivia to France where he was under indictment for crimes allegedly committed during World War II while he was chief of the Gestapo in Lyon, France. The Criminal Division of the Department of Justice conducted an investigation into the relationship between Barbie and the U.S. Government following the end of World War II. The report concluded that the United States Government had no relationship of any kind with Mr. Barbie since he departed from Europe in 1951.
