Prepared by the Virginia Military Institute Research Laboratories for the Nuclear Defense Laboratory, Edgewood Arsenal [October 1966]

Abstract: "A detailed study has been made of the United States Army's continental radioactive waste disposal program. The study included: (1) investigations of the radioactive waste disposal facilities at Edgewood Arsenal, of typical Army sites producing radioactive wastes, and of commercial disposal facilities; (2) determination of types and quantities of wastes produced; (3) descriptions of the current procedures for licensing and compliance with regulations; and (4) a review of current waste disposal responsibilities.

"Waste disposal procedures for the US Air Force and US Navy were determined. Army transportation procedures and costs of transportation services were examined. The study of disposal operations involved data processing and computer analysis of available information, a summary of waste producers and waste shipments, analysis of shipments by continental US Army areas, and an economic comparison of shipments. Conclusions and recommendations are offered."
