Chapel Messages

Dr. Dean Blakeney from Troy, Michigan, preached his second message from Judges 6-7.
Gideon was a man chosen by God to accomplish an important task. The Midianites had plagued Israel for seven years when God picked Gideon to do His work. Gideon didn't consider himself a great leader
able to lead an army.
He was weak in faith and couldn't understand how God could use him. Gideon, being human, was nervous and asked God two times to confirm that He had called him. The Lord is long-suffering and showed
Gideon that He would be with him.
Gideon gathered 32,000 men to go against 135,000 Midianites. This seemed an impossible task, but then God began to pare down the army. God had 22,000 men to leave who were afraid. After having the
men drink water, he sent home the ones who bowed down to drink. This indicated carelessness. There were 300 men left who stood and lapped water from their hands, indicating watchfulness.
God didn't want too many men to go into battle lest they become proud. He wanted it to be very clear that He had won the battle.
The men were then given clay pots, candles, and horns to fight with. When the pots were broken, revealing the candles, and the horns blown it caused so much confusion in the Midianites camp that they
began to kill each other. After the battle, the men didn't think it was anything they had done, but all gave credit to the Lord.
Every one of you is human with fears and worries, but God in His Sovereignty can use you in ways you never thought possible. When you go through trials get on your knees, and ask God for His help. It
is not cowardly to be afraid and still do what God has called you to do. After the battle, the men didn't think it was anything they had done, but all gave credit to the Lord.
Don't be careless; be ready for the battle. Satan wants to destroy you spiritually and morally. Be courageous like Gideon who, even with all his fears, was willing to go forward and do the job for
God. Trust the Lord to give the victory.

Dr. Dean Blakeney of Troy, Michigan, preached.
The analogy of a bow and arrow can be applied to your life as you go out to serve the Lord (Psalm 45:5; Isaiah 49:2). The most
important part of the arrow is the sharp point. Without a sharp point it is not effective, it is just another stick. Sometimes the Lord allows afflictions into a life to sharpen it.
Afflictions will either make a person better or bitter. Sometimes a friend will try to tell you something about your life that you don't want to hear (Proverbs
27:17). If you refuse to listen and scorn their advice, you will not be effective for the Lord.
An arrow is straight. If it is crooked, it will accomplish nothing. Let people know where you stand (I Corinthians 14:8). Don't let your life be a question mark,
but an exclamation mark. You must have a straightforward testimony for the Lord. An arrow goes forward, never backwards.
A life of faith is like riding a bicycle. If you are not moving, you fall. Everyone has sinned. You must ask God to forgive you and then live the rest of your life as God intended. When you sin, get
on your knees, get up, and go on for God.
An arrow is swift. When the Lord directed Philip to join himself to the eunuch's chariot, he ran to catch him. That is the kind of obedience you ought to have. Run the course the Lord sets before you
and you will have victory.
An arrow has one objective. The main objective of your life is to do the will of God, nothing more, or nothing less.
An arrow is hidden in a quiver. Get alone with God, spend time in His Word, and let Him speak to you.
An arrow is obedient to the hand of the archer and can be a deadly instrument to destroy the enemy. Without the archer, the arrow can do nothing. As an arrow in the hand of God, your obedience will
lead to victory and success.
An arrow leaves a mark. When you're in public, be polite and kind, leave a good impression wherever you go. When Peter and John stood before the rulers, they could tell they had been with Jesus. The
Lord Jesus can give you the power, wisdom, and authority to stand up and say what needs to be said.
An arrow has feathers for balance as it heads for the mark. Some people have zeal without balance. Bob Jones University is training you to use your talents the right way. God is molding and making
you ready to go out into the world and leave your mark. Don't quit; go straight until the Lord calls you home.
Be a mighty arrow in the hand of God so He can use you to reach those who are without the Word of God, hopeless and helpless.

Mr. Jerry Thacker of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, spoke today on homosexuality.
When he and his wife discovered in 1986 that they had contracted HIV, the most horrible thought was that it was a disease connected with the sin of homosexuality. They didn't want anyone to think
they were homosexual because they knew what the Bible said about homosexuality.
The media has programmed us to think a certain way about this sinful lifestyle or, as Mr. Thacker calls it, "deathstyle." Romans 1:16-32 tells how we should think
about homosexuality. This passage shows a nation setting itself up for all kinds of bad things to happen, one of those is homosexuality.
Our nation has pushed away the truth, taken the Ten Commandments out of school, prohibited praying at school and athletic functions, and cast God out of public facilities. Many people believe that
AIDS is the judgment of God on our nation, but Mr. Thacker believes that homosexuality is the judgment of God on America.
What is homosexuality? The dictionary defines it as exhibiting sexual desire toward a member of one's own sex. It is not about love between men and men, or women and women, because there is the love
of a father for a son, or the love of brothers for one another. It is sexual activity with the same sex.
The media tries to present this lifestyle in a good light. When a supposed homosexual man was murdered by two young men, it was front-page news. But when two homosexual men in their 20's and 30's
raped and tortured a thirteen-year-old boy for two days before killing him, you didn't hear anything about it. It didn't get reported. There is a huge cover-up where homosexuals are concerned.
HIV can only be transmitted by the exchange of body fluids and is still primarily contracted by homosexual men, who have a large number of sexual partners over their lifetime. This is not a
beneficial lifestyle. Alcohol and drug abuse are high, 35-40% experience deep depression, 40% have contemplated suicide. Eighty-four percent of AIDS cases are transmitted by homosexuals. The life
span of a homosexual man is 42 years, half of that of other men.
Homosexuality is not inborn biologically, just as incest and bestiality are not inborn. Studies have shown that thousands of homosexuals have been set free from this sin. It is a chosen lifestyle
(deathstyle), not an inborn one.
Homosexuals have stated that 10% of the population is homosexual. This is not true, only 2% have homosexual tendencies, and only 1% are exclusively homosexual. Homosexuals do not need special rights;
they do not require minority status. Theirs is a human behavior, not a race.
Be compassionate to those caught up in this sinful deathstyle. Let them know you care, but at the same time let them know homosexuality is a sin. Most people find the homosexual behavior vile and
disgusting. Only when homosexuals know it is sin can they repent (I Corinthians 6:9-10).
God judges and condemns all sin because He is holy. He hates the sin, but loves the sinner. These people are looking for love. They have been hurt by the past and are trying to compensate for the
lack of love in their homes and lives. We need to show them the love of Christ. Help them to understand that only Christ can forgive sin.

Mr. Jerry Thacker of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, spoke today from Job.
Mr. Thacker, his wife, and their teenage daughter all suffer from the HIV virus. Mrs. Thacker contracted the disease in 1984 from a blood transfusion at the time of the birth of their daughter. They
found out about the disease in 1986. At that time it was discovered that Mr. Thacker and their daughter (who became infected from breast-feeding) were also infected with HIV.
Why did this happen to Christians who were trying to live for God? Mr. Thacker had never had an illicit relationship. He didn't even know a homosexual; yet in 1986 he found he had HIV. For seven
years they kept it a secret from their three young children.
In 1986 the life span of someone with HIV was about five years; with full-blown AIDS it was eighteen months. They didn't want their children worrying about losing their parents. The Thackers have
lived seventeen years. Their personal faith in Christ and the character training they received at Bob Jones University have helped them go through this.
In 1995 their sixteen-year-old son died with meningitis. Some might wonder, "Where is God? Why do bad things happen to God's people? Does God care?" The Scripture is clear -- God is in control.
First Job loses everything that is valuable to him except his wife. Next God allows Job to have physical testing so bad that all he could do was sit in the ashes and scrape himself with a broken pot.
Yet he remained faithful to God.
Mr. Thacker has seen his wife suffering greatly and close to death four times in the last seventeen years. Yet she has always been faithful and trusted God through it all. God allows His people to go
through testing so they'll know what is really important in life. God upholds, directs, and controls all things by His wisdom and providence.
Christians are not guaranteed good things on earth. This world is not a friendly place. But God doesn't let anything touch us that doesn't go through His hands first. We don't know what tomorrow
might bring. This is the day to live for the Lord. God will take care of tomorrow.
He is working out all to our good and His glory. Job was a man of character. He was not defined by his suffering, but by his character. The trial did not define Job. Before the testing Job had
already decided to follow God.
God wants us to exercise submission, faith, and prayer. What defines your life? Determine before you have a trial that you will stand and obey. Here at Bob Jones University you will learn how to live
as well as how to make a living. You need to learn to trust God no matter what comes.
When trials come (and they will come), will you stand? Can God trust you with trials? May your character be defined by a relationship with Jesus Christ. If you don't have a personal relationship with
the Savior, you need take care of that before this day ends.

Dr. Bob Jones III preached from Joshua 22 and 24.
Many things are happening in our country. Our economy is in disarray. Many adjustments must be made by everyone. Please keep a stable heart and cool head. Don't let your emotions run away with you
and do something foolish. Everyone wants to help but you need to stay focused and help where there is a need.
There is a battle for the faith going on that requires preparation. That's why you're at Bob Jones University. You're getting good methodical, God-centered preparation for life. This requires
discipline, restraint, and a long-term view of a life to be used by God. Don't get sidetracked from the long-term goal for your life.
Be stable in season and out, in the good times and bad times. Rest and be at peace in the Lord. The message Joshua had for Israel is the one we need today: love God and obey Him. This is a message of
absolute dedication to the Lord God Jehovah, forsaking all other gods.
God is sending a call to the people of America to forsake the god of materialism and ecumenicity. People in this country have begun to blend worship of Jesus Christ with worship of false gods. The
Puritan Church left England because it would not allow the state church to dictate their worship.
There has been an alarming call for all faiths to come together for national unity. As Christians we are called to serve Jesus Christ exclusively. He is the only way, truth, and life. The pressure is
on to discredit Jesus and the people who love Him and to make people fearful of fundamental Christians.
Americans are being called to get on the Lord's side. As Christians we must proclaim Jesus Christ alone to the world. We must do this with great fervor, if we do not we are traitors to Christ. Ask
God to help you stand for Him against all other gods.

Mr. Rand Hummel, program director of the WILDS, continued his message that he began on September 10 on the dark side of the Internet.
We are in a spiritual warfare. We have seen that in the last few days in our country. There were terrorists living in our country, silently and sneakily looking for the perfect time to destroy us.
Satan is doing that to all of you. He wants to destroy you. No one is safe from the dark side of the Internet. There is no privacy (Ezekiel 8:12). The delete button
does not really delete. Your secret sin may not be as secret as you think. There are at least ten ways that what you do on-line can be recorded.
A young man saw a teaser on his screen, he opened it, then deleted it immediately when he saw that it was a child pornography site. It was a sting operation by the state police. One hour later the
state police were at his door. He was arrested and will forever be labeled as a pedophile in that state. There is no privacy.
You may sneak off and somehow figure out a way to look at filth thinking that no one sees, but the eyes of the Lord are in every place. There is no secret sin from Him (Job 34:21; Isaiah 29:15; Mark 4:22; Psalm 90:8). Your secret sin
will be revealed. You cannot sin and win.
You may choose your sin, but not your consequences. You would lose your testimony, the trust of your family, friends, and future spouse, and your close relationship with the Lord. Sin is very
expensive.
If you need to go on-line, go in, get what you need, and get out; don't surf the Internet. Don't provide a way for trouble. Don't constantly live on the edge. If you're married, insist on sharing a
password so you can't go on-line alone. Protect yourself with filters and Internet Service Providers. If you don't recognize a name use the delete button. Stay far away from temptation. If you can't
trust yourself, then get the Internet out of your home. If you choose to spend time looking at trash and your only worry is getting caught, you have a serious heart problem.
If there is no conviction, you need to be searching your heart to see if the Spirit of God lives within you. You need to exercise prevention. Do all to the glory of God. Concentrate on your
relationship with your family. Imagine looking into the eyes of your mother and telling her what you've been looking at.
Concentrate on your relationship with your future spouse. Men, do you want a wife who has had filthy conversations with men on-line? Women, do you want a husband who has spent time looking at
pornography? To protect yourself, use accountability. Never go on-line alone. Make sure your computer is out in the open, visible to any who walks by. Do not talk to strangers on the Internet.
Concentrate on your relationship with God. He cares more than you know. Claim God's protection for you and for your future spouse. Ask God to keep you pure in mind and body. Hate sin and love God.
Don't get caught in the dark side of the Internet.

Dr. Bruce McAllister, director of Extension Ministries, preached from Acts 18 on the subject of marriage.
Before you think about whom God wants you to marry you should be thinking about what your marriage should be like. What should your marriage be focused upon? In Acts we see an example of a couple
whose marriage is based on ministering.
God uses single people in special ways in His service. And this may be God's will for some, but most of you will marry. God used the marriage of Aquila and Priscilla to minister to Paul and others.
Aquila and Priscilla were working people. We are to be working people as well. Work is a means of pleasing the Lord, providing for the needs of individuals and families, assisting with the needs of
others, supporting the Christian ministry, and is a point of contact for witnessing to and encouraging others.
Aquila and Priscilla were willing to provide a place in their home for Paul to stay and even to hold church services. It is important for us to view our homes as places of Christian hospitality and
ministry. When looking for a mate, look for one with a hospitable mentality.
Aquila and Priscilla were willing to travel with Paul. They were flexible in the hand of the Lord. You and your mate must be willing to relocate to assist in a ministry. Many areas around this
country are in need of fundamental churches.
Aquila and Priscilla were devoted friends to Paul all his life. A ministry-minded couple must be willing to serve long term patiently, devotedly and persistently.
Aquila and Priscilla were a witnessing couple (Acts 18:24). God has His "Pauls and Peters" in ministries, but much of the work is done behind the scenes by faithful
married couples with a ministry mentality. Isn't that the kind of marriage you want? Hundreds of married couples have served their lifetimes here at Bob Jones University.
Pour out your life in ministry. Be thinking, planning, praying, and discussing how you can use your training, skills, and gifts in a local church setting. Pray for the Lord to give you a
ministry-minded mate. Look for someone who is ministering now. As soon as you're married start serving the Lord together. Be persistent.
Aquila and Priscilla were a model ministry couple. May God help you to follow their example.

Dr. Bob Jones III introduced United States Congressman Jim DeMint.
Many weeks before the recent tragedy Congressman DeMint was scheduled to be at the University today to make a presentation. Congressman DeMint is a believer who unashamedly loves the Lord Jesus
Christ. We need to pray for him on a regular basis and especially during this time in our country.
Congressman DeMint understands these events better than others because of his redeemed heart. He asked the Lord to save him at the age of twenty-five, when thinking he had everything, he realized he
had nothing without the Lord.
The recent events will change our country forever. Congressman DeMint said this is the first time he has addressed any of his constituents since the events of September 11. He feels very close to Bob
Jones University. One-fourth of his staff are BJU graduates.
Last Tuesday Congressman DeMint was having breakfast at the White House with some of President Bush's staff. They were discussing policies Mr. DeMint is interested in for his state when they were
interrupted and told that a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers. A few minutes later they were told of the second crash and a few minutes later were evacuated. As he left the White House he
noticed a plane flying very slowly and very close to the ground. He assumes that was the aircraft that hit the Pentagon.
He later witnessed things he never thought to see in Washington, D.C. -- helicopters were circling, sirens were blaring everywhere, jets were in the air to protect the airspace -- there was a feeling
of imminent danger.
The wall between church and state, which was so carefully and deliberately constructed by some in our country for many years, was immediately torn down. Everywhere people in government offices were
pleading for God's safety, everyone longed for His comfort. Congressman DeMint asked the Lord to save him at the age of twenty-five, when thinking he had everything, he realized he had nothing
without the Lord.
The recent events will change our country forever. We must change the way we think about our enemies. We cannot expect honor or decency from them. There are people in this world who will kill us if
we do not kill them first. President Bush has been given the authority to go after those who threaten our nation's freedom and way of life. Our nation must humble itself and pray (II Chronicles 7:14).
Congressman DeMint then presented the Spirit of Freedom award to Dr. Bob Jones III in recognition of BJU's using its freedom to pursue virtue. This award is to remind people that it is not what
government does, but what free people do for others that counts. He thanked BJU for the Thanksgiving food drive, for participation in Special Olympics, and for the thousands that go out every weekend
with ministries that are changing peoples lives.
Dr. Bob accepted the award for Bob Jones University. It will be placed in the curio cabinet in the lobby of the Administration Building. May this encourage us all to do more for the Lord.
Dr. Bob admonished us that as Christians we have an obligation to extend ourselves to those who are in need around us. Please continue to pray for the Lord's direction for those making decisions
concerning war. This war is just the beginning and will touch us all.
But we also must not forget the terrorism of abortion which murders over one million innocent unborn babies every year, and the war that is being fought against religious freedom in our courts every
day. As we mourn for the innocent lives which were lost on Tuesday, mourn also for our nation whose moral foundations are crumbling.
As Christians we have access to the Father through prayer, made possible through Calvary. The people of this nation need the Lord; may many come to know Him while hearts are tender.

Dr. Bob Jones III preached from James 4:13-17.
The title of his message was, "Living Life in the Will of the God of Life." There are many stories coming out of New York and Washington about God's protection over His people.
The brother-in-law of one student worked in one of the Twin Towers. When he arrived at work on Tuesday morning he couldn't get in because his boss slept late that morning. He went out of the building
to wait for his boss to come in. The plane hit moments after he exited the building. This young man's boss is Steve Fisher, son of retired faculty member Mr. Gene Fisher, and brother of Dr. David
Fisher, principal of the Academy, and professor of History. Another student had a friend who worked in the area of the Pentagon that was hit. The friend had been called away from the office to
receive an award.
Mr. Doug Manor, son-in-law of Dr. Gustafson, was at the dentist's office in the Pentagon. Moments after he left the building the Pentagon was hit and his dentist was killed. These are just a few of
the instances we will continue to hear about concerning God's grace.
In James 4:13-17 the people were going about their business as if God had no will for their lives. Do you live your life according to God's will? People today live
life assuming that tomorrow will be the same as today with no major overhaul of their plans. The phrase, "If God wills," should surround everything we do in life. Living by those three words
acknowledges God's sovereignty over life. You have no control over your life. You may not be here tomorrow.
This summer four students expected to be here today, but it was God's will to call them home. They are in glory today. They all had plans just as you have plans, but God had other plans for them. God
had sovereign control over their lives just as He has control over your life. Does that bring joy to you or does it irritate you that you have no control over your life?
Living by the words, "If God wills," causes you to acknowledge a higher purpose for your life. The only purpose for your being here is to be an instrument of God. What is your purpose for being here?
If it is for gain, you're no better than the people in James 4, and you should be ashamed. Life is not about buying and selling, but about doing God's will.
If you live by the words, "If God wills," you will recognize the brevity of life. "The most sobering reality in the world today, is that people are dying and going to hell today." This should be
sobering to you. Many of you will be out in the community today working, shopping, and interacting with people who are dying and going to hell.
On Tuesday we watched as people died and went directly to hell. Hopefully many of those who died had been witnessed to, had been given a tract, and had been prayed for, so that in those last moments
they remembered what they had heard and called out to God for His saving mercy. If so, it was because somebody had been faithful to give them the Gospel. What you do today could make the difference
for someone when the hour comes that they face eternity. Don't let one person go to hell because of your neglect today.
Wednesday, September 12, 2001
Dr. Bob Jones III spoke.
Our Drama Ministry Team is in the New York City area this week. Pray for them, as this is a golden opportunity to minister and witness at this time.
Dr. Bob said that there was information that the plane that hit the Pentagon was headed for the White House, but for some unknown reason was diverted to the Pentagon. At that moment many Bob Jones
University graduates representing their states in the American Association of Christian Schools were in a holding area of the White House complex for a briefing. These men would have been in the
midst of the devastation. Thank God for His preserving care for them.
In Revelation 18 the course of a nation was changed in one hour. In one hour yesterday the course of our nation was altered forever. It doesn't take years or centuries
for change, but in moments the world can be turned upside down. Think about that in light of what will take place after the Rapture. As a result of the chaos after the Rapture the world ruler, the
Anti-Christ, will step in and bring stability.
One of the buildings destroyed yesterday had a sign stating that it was the World Financial Center. This whole area was the nerve men. We need to look beyond the immediate and obvious events and look at what it means in the
aftermath.
God's Hand is writing another chapter in mankind. Search your hearts. Blessed are those who trust in Him. May many come to Him in New York City, Washington, D.C., and around the world. Pray for a
great outpouring of God's grace for our country.
9 - 11
Upon receiving the news of the attack against America, Dr. Bob Jones III addressed the student body.
Today is a day of great trouble in our nation. Sites in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, have been targeted by terrorist attacks this morning. The death toll may be in
tens of thousands. Many of you have loved ones in these places.
We are all concerned for our nation at this time. All major buildings in Washington have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. All flights in the United States have been grounded. We need to be
in prayer for our President, the Congress, and military leaders as they make decisions.
Although this is a time for alarm and concern of heart, God's people face concern differently than the world. We can face diversity with a heart that is steadfast in the Lord. We are under His
sheltering wings. Our nation is in shock but we must look to the Lord. Dr. Bob read Psalm 91. This psalm has been a comfort for God's people for ages past. Let us not
panic, or give in to rumor.
This nation has turned its back on God and refused to walk according to His Word. Christians must be evangelistic. As Christians we find stability and confidence in Him. Be exceedingly prayerful in
these days ahead. This is the beginning of a long dark time of trial for our country. We don't know where it is leading, but if it doesn't lead this country back to God it is all in vain.

Mr. Rand Hummel of the WILDS Christian Camp in Brevard, North Carolina, spoke from Ezekiel 8.
The topic of his message was the Internet. We are living in a fast changing world. Everyday we hear of bigger, faster computers. One day every home will be computerized. This high tech society can be
a blessing when used to keep in touch with family, friends, and missionaries on the field. But in the hands of Satan the Internet has a dark side.
Ezekiel 8 correlates to what is going on today in the midst of God's people. God is jealous. His jealousy is different from human jealousy. God is jealous for us.
Always remember that God wants the best for us. He knows what will steal us away from Him. He doesn't want you to mess up your life by the dark side of the Internet.
Many of you are driving God out of your life by choosing to go to the dark side of the Internet. It is a definite choice. It is a heart issue. You'd rather please yourself than God. Do you think you
can get away with it, that God doesn't see (vs. 12)? Have you forgotten that God exists?
Many teens share how they are losing their moms, dads, pastors, and youth pastors to the wickedness on the Internet. You know what God expects of you. Have you turned your back on God (vs. 16)? Don't you know you are choosing what God hates? You can be as close to God as you want to be.
You will face the consequences of your sin (vs. 18). God will forgive your sin, but He doesn't always remove the consequences. You may choose your sin, but not your
consequences.
No one is beyond the power and pull of the Internet, not your parents, teachers, friends or you. Pastors are losing their ministries; families are being torn apart and destroyed because of it. David
was a man after God's own heart, yet he fell into sin. Let the one who thinks he can stand take heed.
The Internet has wicked, perverted immorality of every type. It is extreme in its context. Even the television has certain standards, the Internet has none. It has easy, anonymous access to
pornography so severe it would be illegal to sell in an adult bookstore.
Children's lives are being shattered by the Internet. Something is seriously wrong when this country protects the rights of a few men to make millions of dollars at the expense of women and children.
Love God and hate sin. Ask God to protect you from the dark side of the Internet.

Dr. Bob Jones III preached from Judges 6:11-17.
The Israelites, being hungry and in great need cried out to God for deliverance. God heard and replied to their lament by calling Gideon. God has need for a Gideon in every generation. Is there a
Gideon at Bob Jones University? Could you be a Gideon for God?
Gideon's call was to a higher plane of living, a higher mission. The call set him in a new direction, one he had never dreamed of taking. When God needs a Gideon, only a Gideon will do. He must be
willing to take a stand, lead, and fight. God looks for a man He can be with (Judges 6:12, 14, 16). God is not looking for a speaker, but a doer.
A Gideon must be convinced of God's sufficiency to enable him to do what He calls him to do. To be a Gideon he must realize how bad the times are (v. 13). A Gideon
never heeds a call unless he is aware of how difficult the times are and how much somebody is needed to address it.
Today's society is very bad. In the last ten years crime has increased by 560%, suicide by 200%, and illegitimate births 401%. Even our churches are bad. One out of ten men in the church confess to
dealing with a sex addiction, and 37% of pastors admit to struggling with online pornography. A Gideon is needed in today's society.
A Gideon must realize how unlikely he is to be the man God needs. There would be something wrong if he didn't feel unworthy of the task. A Gideon has to know what will happen to a God-sent man. He
will have to publicly step out in surrender to God. When a Gideon is needed, God knows where to find him. If you're a Gideon, don't make it hard for God to find you. The curse of Bible believing
churches today is that no one takes initiative to do what needs to be done.
What does it take to be a Gideon? It takes a willingness to say yes to God when He calls. God has been calling many of you for a long time. If He calls you, He will equip you for the task. No one has
the power to do what He can. If called, you need to be willing to risk your reputation. God used Gideon as an instrument to accomplish a courageous task which brought peace and restoration to the
people of God.
People in America are beginning to cry out for help. In response God will call a Gideon. It may be you. People all around you are sinking in the mire of sin, sinking to hell. Will you be a Gideon and
pull them out? Say yes to God today. Ask Him to let you know He has called and will go with you. It will open a new road of life that will be so wonderful, a life of consecration, determination, and
promise.

Dr. Bob III preached from Daniel 3 on "The Necessity of 'No.'"
All human history rests between two God-formed bookends, two great "No's." God told Adam and Eve "No" to eating of just one tree. They disobeyed, and he cast them out of the Garden of Eden. In the
final Day of Judgment, He will say to those who have rejected Him, "No, you can't come into Heaven" (Matthew 25:41).
No" is a necessary word for parents, dieters, teachers, doctors, etc. If you don't know the value of "No," you can't be successful. It is a word that is ignored and despised today. How successfully
have you learned to say "No?"
-
The provocation of "No." The three Hebrews had been put into places of prominence in Babylon. Their fellow rulers took occasion against them and told Nebuchadnezzar they disobeyed his command to
bow down to the golden image. Their refusal was not out of obstinacy, but because of principle. Men of principle must draw the line and obey God rather than men.
-
The price for "No."
-
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego lost their position of influence. They could have rationalized that they could give in this one time in order to stay in office and accomplish good by their
influence, but the end never justifies the means. They would not tolerate an act of treason to God.
-
They suffered risk to their bodies and possible loss of life. Jesus said, "If any man . . . hate not . . . his own life also, he cannot be my disciple" (Luke
14:26). How many of us qualify to be called His disciples? Have you yielded your body to Him (Romans 12:1) or reserved it for yourself?
-
They suffered loss of reputation by refusing to go along with the culture. Everyone else was bowing down. Are you willing to go against the crowd--even the Christian crowd? Have you turned your
back on Christ because of pressure from your youth group or school friends? Do you love their approval more than the Lord's? To be successful here you must say "No" to friends who have not submitted
to God. To give in and go along with the crowd is a character weakness.
- The power of "No." Because Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood up for what they believed, God saw to it that they were personally promoted. More important, the name of God abounded in the land,
and the whole culture was transformed (Daniel 3:28-30). You will either be a victim of your culture or will stand up and say "No." Surround yourself with friends
who have Biblical convictions and will not betray Jesus Christ. It is easier to say "No" collectively, as did the three Hebrews. Friends can offer strength and encouragement. Do your friends know
what your convictions are?
Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abram, Joseph, and Moses all had to say "No." The survival of our civilization depends on people of God who know the necessity of "No." Pledge to God that you will say "No" when it
is the only way to do right.

Dr. Bob Jones III preached from I John 1:5.
God is light, and for 75 years Bob Jones University has been trying to reflect that light. If God's light is to be seen in this world it must be reflected off today's believers -- the redeemed
church. Only God has sinless perfection. There is no darkness in God's light. We have no light of our own; we are in darkness, totally depraved, but we can reflect God's light as the moon reflects
the sun's light.
Our public testimony must reflect that we have a wonderful Heavenly Father in a way that others may see our good works and therefore glorify the Father (Matthew
5:16). Our only reason for being here on earth is to reflect Christ's light to the world. How well does the Light reflect off you? How clean is your reflector, your life?
To the degree you tolerate sin in your life, to that same degree the light of Christ is diminished. You must have zero tolerance for any known sin in your life. When you allow any degree of
selfishness, bitterness, slovenliness, materialism, or evil speech in your life you will have darkness to the same degree. To what degree does your faithfulness in witnessing let your light so shine
before men? What kind of a witness are you? What plans have you made this semester to get the Gospel to someone? Whatever your major, you're being trained to go out to be a missionary of Jesus
Christ.
Every home should be preparing children for a life of service to God. The work of God is suffering around the world because parents won't let go of their children. There is not much of a spiritual
sacrifice today. The Lord sacrificed Himself; do you think you won't be called to sacrifice? You must be willing to give up some things for the service of Christ. He gave up glory to be treated as an
outcast, to be beaten and condemned to die. Those who serve Him are not greater than He is.
Faculty and staff members at Bob Jones University understand sacrifice. We may not have what others have but that's okay. We trust God to meet our needs. Serve the Lord, and He will take care of you
(Matthew 6:33). Don't put conditions on your service.
Determine to have zero tolerance of sin in your life. Be discerning. Find out what God approves of for your life. The clarity and purity of the Gospel is lost when we compromise with darkness. The
University will be able to reflect His light to the degree that each of you walks in the light. If you allow darkness in your life, you become a liability to the testimony of Jesus. Search your heart
daily. When the Lord points out darkness in your life, repent of it -- cast it out. Your life is meaningless if you cannot reflect His light.

Dr. Bob Jones III went over the University's Mission Statement:
"Within the cultural and academic soil of liberal arts higher education, Bob Jones University exists to grow Christlike character that is Scripturally disciplined; others-serving; God-loving;
Christ-proclaiming; and focused above."
This statement is to let you and others know what we're trying to do here. You can't separate what you do from what you are. What you are comes from the wellspring of your character. The University
is here to make you what you ought to be so you can do what you do in a Christlike manner. Your character is influenced wherever you go, sometimes for evil. We want really good things to happen to
your character.
Everything here is designed to give you the best liberal arts education anywhere. You will also be taught to be on time, to be friendly, to be well groomed. This is Scriptural discipline that is
required for growing Christlike character. The hammer and chisel of God's Word shape your character to conform to the image of Christ.
Scripture reveals that God wants you to live the rest of your life in His will (I Peter 4:1, 2). Don't live as the unsaved, following your lust (I Peter 4:3). The lusts are still there, but you don't let them govern you anymore. This will be a daily process throughout your life.
As you are in contact with Scripture, yield to it and be shaped by it. You may hear things here that are contrary to what you thought, that go against your grain. You've lived your life like you
wanted, and now you don't like what you are hearing. If the Scripture points out something that is wrong with you and you don't like it, the problem is with you, not the Scripture or the messenger.
Your problem is with God Himself. Before the Cross you had no ability to yield to Scripture, but after the Cross it should be your highest desire.
Be others-serving, using hospitality. The blood of Jesus Christ covers all sin. What is covered by the blood should not be talked about or brought up. It is gone and forgotten; God has put it behind
His back. If you are loving to others, you will not bring up their offenses.
Be a God-loving person, submitting to His will. The redeeming work of Christ is the glory of God. The love of God keeps us faithful and rejoicing even in times of suffering.
Be Christ-proclaiming. God is glorified through Jesus (Philippians 2:11). Be focused above (Hebrews 9:27; I Peter 4:7, 19).
You are separated from eternity by one heartbeat. Your life hangs by a thin, fragile thread. God keeps you forever. The world doesn't give much promise or hope. If you're focused on the world, you
have nothing to rejoice in and will live a depressed life. If you're not looking above, you're missing the point of it all. Live your life in the reality that Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand
of the Father and rules forever. You are His joint heir to all God has prepared for the redeemed.

Dr. Bob Jones III spoke on cleansing.
The great need of the hour is for believers to come to grips with their relationship with Jesus Christ. We have allowed so many sins to accumulate and have become so conformed to the culture of our
society that, though we claim Jesus as our Redeemer and Savior, we are not conformed to Him.
The purpose of BJU is to help you conform to the image of Christ, but that can't happen without repentance and cleansing. Sinful baggage is a reproach to the Lord, keeps us from fellowship with Him,
and inhibits our testimony before sinners who are looking for freedom from the power of sin but don't see evidence of that in our lives. When the Holy Spirit convicts of sin, there is only one right
response. Do business with God. Don't try to save face. What God thinks of us is more important than what our friends think. Humility precedes repentance; retaining pride is a great step toward
condemnation.
In Chapel we will do business with God in a practical way. If the Holy Spirit gets hold of you through God's Word, discipline problems will be prevented. If you get right with God, you also need to
get right with those you've wronged. When you confess to your authorities, we will rejoice that you are tender to God's working; but if you hide your sin and are found out, necessary penalties will
be assessed. Laws don't bother people who don't intend to break them. We have two kinds of rules at BJU--those for convenience and efficiency and those with moral consequences.
We are not content for you to merely conform to those rules with moral consequences. Unless God gets hold of your heart, we haven't succeeded. If God rules your heart, you will be yielded to those in
authority over you--your parents, teachers, pastors, bosses. There will be someone in authority over you all your life. Guardrails are set up to protect you from getting hurt, but they won't protect
you if you willfully jump over them.
